What is grief?

Grief is the acute pain that accompanies loss. Because it is a reflection of what we love, it can feel all-encompassing. Grief is not limited to the loss of people, but when it follows the loss of a loved one, it may be compounded by feelings of guilt and confusion, especially if the relationship was a difficult one.(1)

Do you have recommendations for professional mental health resources? 

There are many professional resources available to help you work through your grief and find support. If you have questions about your personal grief journey, we encourage you to speak to a licensed professional, a doctor or call a counseling service for more information and help. Here are a few resources that have been shared with us that you could possibly look into:

Open Path Collective: Open Path Psychotherapy Collective is a non-profit nationwide network of mental health professionals dedicated to providing in-office and online mental health care—at a steeply reduced rate—to individuals, couples, children, and families in need. They have affordable therapy services available through their platform.

SAMHSA: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities. They offer a free and confidential helpline.

Do you have any self care tips for grieving?

​Here are a few tips our LLO family has found helpful in their grief journeys. 

​

  1. Exercise - go for a walk, hike, or a run 

  2. Take a deep breath - deep breathing helps clear your mind 

  3. Read - pick up a book about grief, self help or whatever you think might be relaxing for you

  4. Get fresh air - go out and take in nature, your surroundings and get some sun

  5. Cry it out - having a good cry never hurts, it actually activates the parasympathetic system and releases stress.

Do you have any resources on grieving and the pandemic (COVID-19)? 

We understand the challenges and difficulties people may be facing as they grieve the loss of their loved one during the pandemic when finding in-person support and resources might feel more complicated. These feelings can become even more pronounced during social isolation and the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic and the health and safety of our loved ones. Grieving during times like this is hard. There are resources that can help.
